Sterling College students professors attended the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Seventeen Sterling College Theatre students and two professors attended the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival last week in Des Moines, Iowa. The regional festival attracted over 1,300 participants from colleges and universities from seven midwestern states.
The KC/ACTF ran from January 23-27 and included numerous workshops, sessions, performances, auditions, competitions and a costume parade. This was the first in-person conference since 2020.
The Kansas Academy of Science awarded Sophia Hodge one of three undergraduate grants.

The Kansas Academy of Science awarded Sterling College junior Sophia Hodge of Topeka, one of three undergraduate grants in the state of Kansas for the 2022-23 school year. Hodge’s project is “Assessment of Bacillus mojavensis BM1 found in Kansas as a Candidate for Bio-fertilizer and Microbial Pesticide.”

Sterling College Theatre’s opening production of the year, “Red Velvet”, has been cited for excellence by the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF) organization. “Red Velvet” was staged the last weekend of August as the senior project of theatre major Torey Wilson.
Wilson played the central role of Ira Aldridge, the first African American to play Shakespeare’s title role in Othello. In addition, he directed the show with assistance from Sterling College Theatre Artistic Director Sasha Hildebrand.
The Sterling College Music Department is doing their part in ringing in the season!

The event will begin at 7 p.m. on the east side of Cooper Hall. Sterling College students, faculty and staff, as well as the public are invited to this free event on East Cooper Lawn.

Sterling College recognized its Alumni Award winners for 2022 who were awarded at Homecoming on Oct. 6-8. The Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Rev. Robert ‘Bob’ Wade ’69, the Spirit of Sterling Alumni Award was awarded to Donna (Brownlee) Foster ’76, and the Young Alumni Award was given to Dr. Kysha (Nichols) Totten ’09.

The Theology and Ministry Department at Sterling College will present its annual Fall Theology Conference on October 27-28 on the campus of Sterling College. This year’s conference is themed “The Christian and Imagination,” with Dr. Jay Smith, president and Bridger professor of ethics at Yellowstone Theological Institute. The public is invited to attend all presentations.
