The first convocation of the Sterling College academic year will take place Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. in Culbertson Auditorium in Spencer Hall. Keynote speaker Dr. Timothy A. Gabrielson, assistant professor of biblical studies, will deliver his speech “An Education for Your Career — and Life” as students and employees gather to celebrate the start of classes.

Sterling College assistant professor Dr. Glenn Butner’s second book, “Trinitarian Dogmatics: Exploring the Grammar of the Christian Doctrine of God”, released on July 19. Butner will host a book launch event on Thursday, August 25 at 2:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall inside Cooper Hall on the Sterling College campus. The event includes a presentation by Butner and is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

August 2, 2022, Sterling, Kan. – The Sterling College Office of Institutional Advancement has grown with the additions of Jim Johnson ’80 as director of development and Liliana Ball as administrative assistant for advancement and alumni.
“The addition of Jim and Liliana to the Advancement and Alumni team has been a great blessing and very positive move for the department and the College as a whole. They are both a joy to work with and bring optimism and significant skills sets to their respective roles at Sterling,” said David Earle ’91, vice president for advancement.
Sterling College has named Jose Carrillo as the College’s campus pastor.

August 2, 2022, Sterling, Kan. – Sterling College has named Jose Carrillo as the College’s campus pastor. Carrillo has previously served as a young adult pastor and associate pastor at the Christians by the Bay Church in Hercules, Calif. In his role at Sterling Carrillo will be facilitating and encouraging spiritual growth on campus and he will be providing leadership to the Office of Spiritual Life, a sub-department of the broader Office of Student Life.

Sterling’s Slate named a 2022 KICF Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship Recipient
Sterling College student Hannah Slate of San Angelo, Texas, was awarded a 2022 Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship from the Kansas Independent College Foundation. KICF awards up to 20 individual scholarships, one for a student at each Foundation member institution. Slate is a Christian Ministries major with a 4.00 GPA at Sterling.
Dr. Wai-Foong Hong was given The William M. McCreery Teaching Award.

Dr. Wai-Foong Hong, professor of biology at Sterling College, was given The William M. McCreery Teaching Award as part of the College’s Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 7, 2022. The award recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching and is presented to a faculty member whose efforts have provided noteworthy and innovative instruction to Sterling College students during the academic year. The award was established in honor of Sterling College’s fourth president, William M. McCreery, and has been awarded to one outstanding faculty member each year since 1977.

With years of hard work and service behind them, Sterling College seniors Ardynn Hershberger of Lyons, Kan., and Kenan Comley of Sterling, Kan., were named the 2022 Outstanding Female and Male Graduates in conjunction with the Fran Jabara Leadership Award.
The awards are given to two students who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement, and who portray an enthusiastically Christian faith. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher and are voted upon by faculty and staff.

Friends and family gathered in the Gleason Center at Sterling College on Saturday morning, May 7, 2022, to celebrate the achievements of 123 graduates. The City of McPherson Pipe Band led the procession, and speaker, Dr. Roy Millhouse, associate professor of theology & ministry, gave a speech titled “A Pile of Rocks.” The Class of 2022 were honored as part of this year’s program. The presentation of degrees followed with students walking the stage and shaking hands with President Scott Rich, completing their time at Sterling.
It’s time for the “Confusical Popcert” – a unique mix of “musical-pops-concert” with a bit of “confusing” mixed in. The Sterling College Symphonic Band under the direction of Larry Brownlee will be presenting Confusical Popcert #23 this Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium. This year’s performance comes with the title and promise “It’s Gonna Be Epic!”

On Saturday, April 23, 300 Sterling College students, faculty, staff and community members joined together to serve the town of Sterling, Kansas, by participating in the event Love Sterling, a city-wide service day. The coordinator of Love Sterling, Emilie Holland, spiritual life assistant and missions director, and several students had been planning the event since January.
