Dr. Nicole Glasgow, assistant professor of athletic training at Sterling College, was given The William M. McCreery Teaching Award as part of the College’s Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The award recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching and is presented to a faculty member whose efforts have provided noteworthy and innovative instruction to Sterling College students during the academic year. The award was established in honor of Sterling College’s fourth president, William M.

With years of hard work and service behind them, Sterling College seniors Taya Wilson of Sterling, Kan., and Tanner Albright of Kingman, Kan., were named the 2023 Outstanding Female and Male Graduates in conjunction with the Fran Jabara Leadership Award.
The awards are given to two students who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement, and who portray an enthusiastically Christian faith. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher and are voted upon by faculty and staff.

Friends and family gathered in the Gleason Center at Sterling College on Saturday morning, May 6, 2023, to celebrate the achievements of 103 graduates. The City of McPherson Pipe Band led the procession, and speaker, Don Reed ’68, CEO of Last Act of Stewardship Services, gave a speech titled “Watch Over Your Heart.” The Class of 2023 were honored as part of this year’s program. The presentation of degrees followed with students walking the stage and shaking hands with President Scott Rich, completing their time at Sterling.

Sterling College presented two research talks at the Kansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Conference by Robert Stansbury, student, and Dr. Samuel A. Hokamp, assistant professor of mathematics. The MAA is the largest math organization in the world.
Haspels’ senior art show entitled “Plydars” will be on display through May 5 at the Sterling College Art Center Gallery, 306 West Washington, Sterling.

Sterling College senior Acacia Haspels has a heart for many things – Africa, soccer, her faith, and her art. Haspels grew up in Nairobi, Kenya but has deep roots in Kansas. She is, in fact, one of very few fifth-generation students Sterling College has ever had. Sterling College journalism garnered recognition recently by securing four victories in the 2023 Kansas Collegiate Media Contest. Junior Shaylee Gibbs, of Amarillo, Texas, came away as an individual winner.
Also, the Sterling College Observer, which is in its fourth year as the campus student media outlet, received second place in the overall category. In that category, publications can earn one or none of three overall honors within their classifications, which are based on the type of publication and institution.
“I’m glad to see our work paying off,” Gibbs said.
Isabella Galvez Ortiz has been selected as the Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society representative.

Sterling College Graduate Student Isabella Galvez Ortiz of Panama City, Panama, has been selected as the Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society representative for the MAATA D5 Student Leadership Committee.
“For Isa to be chosen to represent our state within our district is an amazing honor. We are very proud of her,” said Dr. Pete Manely, professor of athletic training and program director of graduate athletic training education.

The Sterling College Honors Program will host “Charles Curtis: The First Native American Vice President,” a presentation and discussion by Erin Pouppirt on Friday, April 21, at 10 a.m. The event, made possible through a grant by Humanities Kansas, will be held in Heritage Hall in Cooper Hall and is open to the public.
“We are so excited to host Erin Pouppirt to help our students learn about this important and under-recognized figure in American and Kansas history,” said Dr. Glenn Butner, director of the honors program.
