The final mainstage show of the Sterling College Theatre season, Stephen Sondheim’s popular musical Into the Woods, comes with extra weight and significance for eight seniors. This is largest group of graduating music and theatre students in the college’s known history. Their final show will be presented on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 in Culbertson Auditorium on the College campus.

Everyone in the Sterling College Music Theatre production of the Stephen Sondheim classic musical Into the Woods is doing “double duty” – being in the cast and helping in some other capacity with the production. But Sterling sophomore Noah Svaty is pulling “triple duty” as he is set designer, lighting designer, and playing the leading role of the Baker for the show which will be presented this Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium on the college campus.

A music recital usually means a formal setting for classical music perhaps sung in a different language. An upcoming Sterling College music recital will be more like a musical revue which will include music theatre songs, with staging, a sense of character and even a little tap dance. Rachel Thomson, Hutchinson, will be presenting her Senior Music Theatre Recital on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium on the College campus.

Ben Ray ’82, current Board of Trustees member and Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Derby, Kan., will be the speaker for the 2024 Sterling College Commencement ceremony. The ceremony will honor the Class of 2024 and will take place on Saturday, May 11, at 9:45 a.m. in the Gleason Physical Education Center on the Sterling College campus.

The Sterling College Forensics and Debate team not only competed at the recent Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and Convention held in Phoenix, Ariz., but was also recognized as being one of few colleges to have had an active team which has competed in the National PKD Tournament for over 100 years.
March is Women’s History Month and Sterling College Concert Choir will be celebrating with their concert “Music, She Wrote” which is slated for this Sunday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling. Besides Concert Choir, the program will feature select ensemble Highland Singers as well as SC Lasses (women’s choir) and SC Lads (men’s choir).

Over 250 high school students attended the 35th annual Sterling College Theatre Workshop recently. The event included two workshop sessions and a special matinee performance of the play Baskerville. Students from 18 schools from Lawrence to Liberal attended.

The Sterling College Debate/Forensics Team traveled to Canyon, Texas, earlier in February to compete in the Sweetheart Swing Debate/Forensics Tournament hosted by West Texas A&M University. Four Sterling competitive speakers competed in the tournament and the team collectively placed second overall.
