Sterling College’s Hans Nickel, assistant professor of sport management, was presented with The William M. McCreery Teaching Award at commencement on May 13, 2017. Nickel, the former sports information director at Sterling, was recognized for noteworthy and innovative instruction to Sterling College students during the academic year. The award is given to one faculty member each year after being nominated by peers.

Emily Fuller of Miltonvale, Kansas, and Austin Mettling of Udall, Kansas, were named the 2017 recipients of the Outstanding Male and Female Graduate Award in conjunction with the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award.
The awards are given to two students who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement, and who portray an enthusiastically Christian faith. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher and are voted upon by faculty and staff.

Friends and family gathered on East Cooper Lawn at Sterling College on Saturday morning, May 13, 2017, to celebrate with 146 graduates for their achievements. The City of McPherson Pipe Band led the procession, and speaker and alumnus Larry Dashiell ’76 spoke to the graduates about his time at Sterling College and how God knows the story each graduate will create, including the ending. The presentation of degrees followed with students walking the stage to shake hands with President Scott Rich and completing their time at Sterling.

Continuing an eight-year streak, the Sterling College Debate Team finished the 2016-17 season with a trip to the National Forensic Association National Tournament in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Seasoned juniors Gage Brookman and Bryce Harner, both of Hutchinson, Kansas, represented the College as they landed a 12th-place finish in overall team sweepstakes.

With a 100 percent chance of rain in the forecast for Saturday, April 29, three Love Sterling teams used Friday’s weather to complete service projects early. While the inclement weather dampened part of the productivity of Saturday, approximately 15 projects were worked on, with a few more scheduled for the week following Love Sterling.
The Sterling College ensembles and choirs will perform concerts on two separate days.

Ending the academic year on good notes, the Sterling College ensembles and choirs will perform concerts on two separate days. On Saturday, May 6, at 3 p.m., the Sterling College Instrumental Ensemble and Wind Ensemble will perform at the First United Methodist Church in Sterling. They will play band music from Great Britain and conclude with a piece by the late Dave Brubeck. The Sterling College choirs will perform on Sunday, May 7, at 3 p.m. at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church.

The Sterling College Biology Department was recently represented in an academic journal for their research. Alumnus Joshua “Bo” Westerfield ’16 and junior Lacey Buckwalter of Sylvia, Kansas, were both featured in Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science for their research on porcupines in Kansas.

The 40th Annual Honors Convocation was held in Culbertson Auditorium on Friday, April 21. More than 100 students were recognized for receiving scholarships and awards, as well as being named to Who’s Who Among Students in America’s Colleges and Universities. Each scholarship and award has various criteria chosen by the donor at the establishment of the award or scholarship. Service Awards were given to sophomore Mikaela Wells of Haven, Kansas, and Terry Ehresman, Director of Career Services and First Year Programs.
Aaron Pinkerton was selected for a research experience at California State University

Sterling College junior Aaron Pinkerton of Minneola, Kansas, was one of eight math majors from across the United States selected for a research experience for undergraduates at California State University, Fresno. In it, he and two other students worked under the guidance of Dr. Steve Chung, assistant professor of mathematics at Fresno State, to create a mathematical tool that would accurately predict the success rate of endovenous laser ablation given factors of the surgery.
