Sterling College Debate in national top-25 for eighth year

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Continuing an eight-year streak, the Sterling College Debate Team finished the 2016-17 season with a trip to the National Forensic Association National Tournament in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Seasoned juniors Gage Brookman and Bryce Harner, both of Hutchinson, Kansas, represented the College as they landed a 12th-place finish in overall team sweepstakes.

“We had a rough patch in the middle of the season this year, but Gage and Bryce didn’t let that stop them in their performance at nationals. They performed well, and I am proud of their efforts. Although 12th place may be a bit of a letdown from the fourth and sixth place finishes of the past two years, we were still amongst the elite teams in the nation, and we are always a threat to reach the top 10,” said Ken Troyer, debate coach.

Sterling College’s Dara Quastad also competed at the National Interstate Oratorical competition in Louisiana April 20-22, 2017. Only the top two collegiate persuasive speakers from each state are invited to attend.

“Dara finished in the top 30 competitors, which for a true novice, is quite an accomplishment.  Her success this season has certainly provided ample motivation for this coming year,” said Troyer.
