Sterling College held a ceremony to welcome 10 new students into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society on Friday, April 22. Alpha Chi extends membership to applicants that are in the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes.
“Membership in Alpha Chi is an incredible honor, and the history of Alpha Chi at Sterling College goes back many years, with the first members being inducted in 1922. These students are, then, a part of the legacy of excellence at Sterling,” said Daniel Julich, honors program director.
The rain poured down on Friday, but it stopped just in time for the Love Sterling volunteers to complete their projects on Saturday.

The rain poured down on Friday, but it stopped just in time for the Love Sterling volunteers to complete their projects on Saturday. Approximately 335 Sterling College students, employees and community members came together to finish 35 projects in and around Sterling during the day of service. Projects included spreading mulch at the Sterling Grade School playground, landscaping, painting preparation, hauling wood and trimming or cutting down trees.
The Freeman Lecture Series for Servant Leadership at Sterling College featured the youngest speaker to date, 25-year-old award-winning director Brian Ivie.

The Freeman Lecture Series for Servant Leadership at Sterling College featured the youngest speaker to date, 25-year-old award-winning director Brian Ivie. Only a few years older than the majority of the audience, Ivie shared his experience, knowledge and insight that influenced and challenged the entire crowd. Joining the students and staff at Sterling College, student leaders from surrounding area high schools came to hear Ivie at the Freeman Lecture Series.

Former Sterling College student Kaulana Werner died Sunday, April 24, 2016, in Waianae, Hawaii. Werner played football at Sterling College during the 2015-2016 season. He was a freshman majoring in business administration: management and played the defensive back position for the Warriors.
“Kaulana was a determined young man that gave maximum effort every time he was on the field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will truly be missed,” said Gary Kempf, athletic director.
The Sterling College Debate Team traveled to Muncie, Indiana, to take another top-ten title.

The Sterling College Debate Team traveled to Muncie, Indiana, to take another top-ten title with sophomore Gage Brookman forging new ground at the National Forensic Association Lincoln-Douglas Debate National Tournament. Brookman of Hutchinson, Kansas, finished third, marking the first time a Sterling College student has broken into the round of eight. The team took sixth place in Debate Sweepstakes, the school’s second highest finish to date.
The Wind Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on May 2 at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church.

On Sunday, May 1, 2016, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church, the Sterling College choir groups will perform their annual Masterworks Concert. The Wind Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on May 2 at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church.

Five Sterling College seniors will exhibit their final body work, Rendered, beginning on Wednesday, April 27, from 5-7:30 p.m. An opening reception will be held in the gallery of the Sterling College Art and Media Center. Working over the last semester to complete their degrees in art and design, Erica Best, Brandon Givens, Josiah Gunn, Renee Lanham and Nathan Terry will display 60 works that will be exhibited through May 13.

On Friday, April 15, Sterling College hosted its 39th Annual Honors Convocation in Culbertson Auditorium. Thirty-two students received awards for their achievements in academics, athletics and leadership while 50 students were awarded scholarships in their academic and athletic fields. Each scholarship and award has various criteria chosen by the donor at the establishment of the award or scholarship.

Sterling College has announced the establishment of the Barbara Thompson Music Endowed Scholarship Fund. The endowed scholarships are made possible by a gift from Robert ’45 and the late Barbara “Barbie” (Dietz) ’47 Thompson.
“Bob and Barbie left a profound legacy at the College and in the community. The opportunities these scholarships represent are a testament to their servant hearts,” said Scott Carter, vice president for institutional advancement and external relations.
