Keeping with tradition, Sterling College welcomed students back with the annual Keynote Convocation held on the first Friday of the semester, Aug. 26. Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Spencer Wagley spoke to students at the address, asking them to consider what happens in life when their plans do not work out.
“We like our plans to come together. What happens when things are not that smooth? What happens when things begin to totally fall apart like a Nature Valley granola bar? When your direction totally changes?” asked Wagley.
Three employees were honored for 15 and 20 years of service to Sterling College.

Three employees were honored for 15 and 20 years of service to Sterling College. Nancy Hicks, Janet Caywood and Deb Wiebe celebrated the achievement at the annual Kickoff Banquet on August 18.
Hicks, administrative assistant for the Sterling Teacher Education Program, began working at the College in 2000. She has a bachelor’s in elementary education, and she taught second grade and junior high and high school choir in Corona, New Mexico. This background, along with her management experience in business, has been beneficial to the education department.
Marge Jones was congratulated by Sterling College President Scott Rich for 35 years of service to the College on Aug. 18 at the annual Kickoff Banquet.

The beginning of Sterling College’s academic year is August 24, and seven individuals have joined the College’s faculty this fall. Dr. Karen Baehler, Dr. Glenn Butner, Ryan Corwin, Dawn Eliserio, Emily Grace, Dr. Rachel Griffis and Amy Kosek officially started August 10, though many have been in the area for quite some time.
Sterling College graduate Ben Ray ’82 has been elected to join the College’s Board of Trustees.

Pete Manely, director of athletic training at Sterling College, has been named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Athletic Trainer of the Year, announced by the KCAC on Friday, July 15. Sterling College Assistant Professor of Art and Design David Stenulson’s painting “School Dance” will be on display at Ann Tower Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky, adding to the list of galleries that have recently exhibited his work. According to Ann Tower Gallery, the annual summer group exhibit, “Evolving Revolving 15,” displays “new work from artists represented by the gallery, including paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, ceramics and folk art.”
