Sterling College announces that Rev. Dr. James D. Miller of Tulsa, Okla., will be the speaker for the 2011 Commencement ceremonies. The Commencement ceremony is to be held Saturday, May 14 at 9:45 a.m. on the lawn of Cooper Hall.
On Saturday, April 30th, nearly 200 Sterling College students, faculty and staff and community members – ranging in age from elementary children to grandparents—joined together to serve the town of Sterling, Kan., by participating in the event “Love Sterling,” a town wide service day. The president of Love Sterling, sophomore Nathan Lusk, and a leadership team of students advised by Joellen Maurer, had been planning the event since the Fall of 2010.
The annual Night of One Acts at Sterling College will be presented this Friday, April 29th in Culbertson Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. Five short plays directed by members of the Play Directing class will be performed with some new and familiar faces to the Sterling College Theatre. The events is free and open to the public.
Sterling College seniors Taren Morse of Sterling, Kan., and Jessica Stuart of Wichita, Kan., will have their Senior Art Exhibition on display at the Art and Design Center from April 19th – May 12th . A reception in their honor will be held on Friday, April 29th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Art and Design Center gallery.
Wichita, Kan. – Andrew Archbold, a senior centerfielder for the Warriors, has been named the KCAC Baseball Player of the Week for his performance last week. During the week, Archbold went nine for 12 from the plate for a 0.750 batting average with two doubles, a triple, two RBI’s and seven runs scored in three games played. Andrew was also four for four on stolen base attempts.
Wichita, Kan. - After a record breaking weekend at KT Woodman, Jillian Linnebur has been named the KCAC Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.
The Sterling College Forensics Team capped the season with nine out of ten team members bringing home awards at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament. The tournament was held March 23-26 at Mt. Hood Community College in Portland, Ore. With more than 70 colleges competing and many events having more than 200 competitors, the Sterling College team fared well with Ryan Corwin capturing 7th place overall in After Dinner Speaking. This success comes after the Sterling College Debate team took 9th place in National Parliamentary Debate, of which Corwin was also a part.
Winfield, Kan. – Trouble was awaiting the Sterling College Lady Warrior Softball Team in Winfield, Kansas. The Southwestern College Lady Moundbuilders were ready for Sterling and protected their home field in both games of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) series. Southwestern won the first game between the two teams 5-2 then defeated the Lady Warriors in the second game 7-2. Losing both games drops Sterling to 4-4 in the KCAC, good enough for sixth place in the conference.
Hutchinson, Kan. – Beautiful weather accompanied the Sterling College Warrior Golf Team to the Highlands Golf Course in Hutchinson for the Sterling Spring Invitational Golf Tournament. Ben Biederer was the top scorer for the Warrior Men in the tournament, finishing fourth in the tournament with a two round total of 151, three strokes back of the champion. As a team, SC finished in fourth with a team score of 641 behind Southwestern College, Bethel College, and Bethany College. Alexa Pelton and Katelynn Cantrell were the only two Lady Warriors to compete and finished tied with each other for fifth place on the women’s side.
The Sterling College Biology Department was recently represented at the Kansas Academy of Science Annual Meeting held in Baldwin City, Kan., on April 8-9. Two students, Leonore Enfield of Raymond, Kan., and Tyler Wise of Clearwater, Kan., gave a research presentation titled, “Effects of Prairie Restoration on Small Mammals.”
