Out of a class of 127 students, two were named Sterling College’s 2016 Outstanding Male and Female Graduates in conjunction with the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award - Joshua Aaron Hoover of Elbing, Kansas, and Hayley Elizabeth Ray of Derby, Kansas.
The awards are given to two students who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement, and who portray an enthusiastically Christian faith. They must have a cumulative gpa of 3.4 or higher and are voted upon by faculty and staff.

Sterling College presented the 2016 William M. McCreery Teaching Award to Daniel Swartz, assistant professor of art and design, recognizing him for his creative and innovative classroom teaching. The award was established in honor of Sterling College’s fourth president, William M. McCreery, and has been awarded to one outstanding faculty member each year since 1977.

The traditional bagpipes filled the air as Sterling College celebrated commencement on Saturday, May 14, 2016, on East Cooper Lawn. After a speech by Kimberly (McCreery) Kuo, senior vice president for public affairs at Coca-Cola Consolidated, who encouraged students to let God write their story as they continue on to a new adventure, graduates turned their tassels and walked across the stage to shake several hands to complete the ceremonial celebration of hard work and dedication. Sterling College named 127 students as members of the class of 2016.
The Best of Show was awarded to Annalise Albrecht of Hill City, Kansas.

Sterling College has announced the winners of the first Great Plains Annual Photography Competition, a juried art show for high school students. The Best of Show, along with the grand prize of a Nikon DSLR camera, was awarded to Annalise Albrecht of Hill City, Kansas, and Second Best of Show was awarded to MaKayla Jones of Yates Center, Kansas. Seven students were also recognized as Category Winners and received scholarships and memory cards.

Continuing a string of successful exhibitions, David Stenulson, Sterling College assistant professor of art and design, recently had his contemporary drawing selected for the art show “Beyond the Surface” at Red Raven Art Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Stenulson’s drawing, “Anatomical Study of a Skull,” is on display for the month of May.
Sterling College seniors will celebrate their final days as students this weekend.

Beginning with Senior Breakfast in the cafeteria on Friday morning, Sterling College seniors will celebrate their final days as students this weekend. The public is invited to attend Baccalaureate in Culbertson Auditorium on Friday, May 13, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The worship service will include music, student reflections, a special time of prayer, and a sermon from Chaplain Christian Dashiell. Commencement will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Four Sterling College students presented research at the Southwestern Psychological Association convention April 8-10 in Dallas, Texas. Research students Ellie Becker, Madison Stephens, Samantha Wilper and Dayton Winter worked with Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Jennifer Dyson to collect 1,157 survey responses as part of their class Research Experience. The research of Stephens and Wilper further explored Sterling College Professor Emeritus Dr. Arn Froese’s work on cell phone use in the classroom and 2015 graduate David Amador’s ideas about perceptions of a person who takes selfies.
The Sterling College theatre program will conclude the season with a presentation of student-directed one-act plays May 6-7 at 8 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium.

The Sterling College theatre program will conclude the season with a presentation of student-directed one-act plays May 6-7 at 8 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium. To fulfill requirements for their play directing class, Bryce Bassett of Cassoday, Kansas; Derrick Hogan of Rodeo, California; Cody Meins of Canon City, Colorado; Nate Sizemore of Clearwater, Kansas; and Cassidy Woodard of Abilene, Kansas, will each be directing a one-act play. The public is welcome to enjoy this free event.

Sterling College held a ceremony to welcome 10 new students into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society on Friday, April 22. Alpha Chi extends membership to applicants that are in the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes.
“Membership in Alpha Chi is an incredible honor, and the history of Alpha Chi at Sterling College goes back many years, with the first members being inducted in 1922. These students are, then, a part of the legacy of excellence at Sterling,” said Daniel Julich, honors program director.
The rain poured down on Friday, but it stopped just in time for the Love Sterling volunteers to complete their projects on Saturday.

The rain poured down on Friday, but it stopped just in time for the Love Sterling volunteers to complete their projects on Saturday. Approximately 335 Sterling College students, employees and community members came together to finish 35 projects in and around Sterling during the day of service. Projects included spreading mulch at the Sterling Grade School playground, landscaping, painting preparation, hauling wood and trimming or cutting down trees.
