Former Sterling College Board of Trustees member Robert Maurice Reed ’39 passed away June 27, 2016. Reed leaves behind a legacy of service to the College and the Sterling community.

“Mr. Reed was an incredible individual whose service was unmatched. He dedicated himself to family, church and community in addition to serving Sterling College. He will be greatly missed,” said Scott Rich, president.

Reed joined the Merchant Marines during World War II and served as chief radio officer on three ships in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. He returned to Sterling and ran a dry cleaning business for 13 years.  He also taught in the Sterling public schools as a junior high science and math teacher, during which time he earned a master’s degree from Emporia State University in 1962.  Robert served as principal for Sterling High School for three years before returning to Topeka to teach in the Washburn Rural School District until his retirement in 1982.

Reed served on the Sterling College Board of Trustees for five years and also served eight years on the board for Sterling Public Schools.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Don ’68 and Linda ’69, Sterling; daughter-in-law, Ginger ‘66, Sterling; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
