Sterling College Associate Professor of Athletic Training Pete Manely was awarded the McCreery Teaching Award for his excellence in teaching at Commencement on May 16. The McCreery Teaching Award recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching and is presented to a faculty member whose efforts have provided noteworthy and innovative instruction to Sterling College students during the academic year. The award was established in honor of Sterling College’s fourth president, William M. McCreery, and has been awarded to one outstanding faculty member each year since 1977.

The Class of 2015 walked across the stage in Gleason Physical Education Center on Saturday, May 16, to mark the end of their time at Sterling College. President Scott Rich shook the hands of each graduate as they were welcomed into the family of Sterling College Alumni.

It may be cloudy and rainy outside, but the Commencement Weekend Celebration will be full of smiling faces. The graduating seniors will gather in the cafeteria for the annual senior breakfast provided by the Alumni Association and Career Services on Friday morning, followed by their class picture on the steps of Cooper Hall. Commencement rehearsal, an afternoon gathering, and dinner will lead up Friday’s main event – Baccalaureate. The Friday worship service has been redesigned this year to include more worship music and a short address by Chaplain Christian Dashiell.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially announced the seeds and brackets for the 2015 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. The Sterling College Warriors will be headed to Shawnee, Okla. for the opening round on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University. The tournament is scheduled to take place from May 12-15.
The five teams in the Shawnee bracket included: #1 seed Oklahoma Baptist University (Host), #2 seed LSU-Shreveport, #3 seed Sterling College, #4 seed Briar Cliff, and #5 seed Mid-America Nazarene University.
The community of Sterling is invited to attend a night of worship on May 12 at 7 p.m. at Studio 96.

Facilitated by the Worship Arts class with the theme “One: Father, Spirit, Son, Body,” participants will visit different stations with everyone coming together at the end, joining to represent the Body of Christ. The majority of athletic training students aspire to become certified athletic trainers upon graduation. That dream will become a reality for five Sterling College athletic training majors who passed their Board of Certification exam and are now eligible for certification upon conferral of their bachelor’s degree in athletic training. The group passed the test on their first try, yielding a 100 percent pass rate for this year’s senior class.
Students, faculty, staff and Sterling community members were out painting, raking, cleaning up brush and landscaping.

Love Sterling continues to grow as approximately 300 volunteers from Sterling College and the community joined together for a day of service and celebration. The teams completed 46 projects and served an estimated 1,100 hours.

Mark Alan Hemphill of Florence, Arizona, will perform his senior recital at the United Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. The public is invited to attend.
Hemphill will sing in French, Italian, German and English, featuring duets with several other people including Dr. Laura Bateman, assistant professor of music. He will also sing an arrangement of Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on this Shining Night” and musical theatre selections.

Competing against top schools from across the country, the Sterling College debate team ousted state and private schools to earn the title of fourth in Debate Sweepstakes at the National Forensics Association Lincoln-Douglas Debate National Tournament at Ohio University April 21. Five students contributed to the point total, earning a place in Sterling College and national debate history: Gage Brookman of Hutchinson, Kansas; Cody Campbell of Buckeye, Arizona; Bryce Harner of Hutchinson, Kansas; Brandon Hoesli of Salina, Kansas; and Darren Kootz-Eades of Great Bend, Kansas.
