Sterling College announced that Scott Downing ’79 has been named vice president for athletics, effective January 1, 2019. Downing comes to Sterling from Liberty University where he currently serves as special teams coordinator for their football team. He brings over 30 years of coaching experience at the highest collegiate levels, including seven as head coach. Downing joins Justin Morris ’00 in the Warrior Athletics Office, as Morris was recently named director of athletic operations.
Sterling College has received a grant from Humanities Kansas for $2,300 to host “Virtues of Place: Wendell Berry and Rural Kansas.”

Sterling College has received a grant from Humanities Kansas for $2,300 to host “Virtues of Place: Wendell Berry and Rural Kansas.” The program will include a panel, lecture, and two book discussions, inspired by Wendell Berry’s writing on place and community, to further discussion about education in rural Kansas. Book discussions will occur at 10 a.m. on both March 30 and April 27, at the Sterling Free Public Library. The symposium will take place on April 29 with a panel at 4 p.m. in Cornerstone and lecture at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall on the Sterling College campus.
The Sterling College Symphonic Band will perform their Christmas concert on Sunday, December 2, at 3 p.m.

Sterling College will begin the Advent season with Share the Light, an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, on Dec. 2, 2018. Beginning at 6 p.m. on East Cooper Lawn, the event will include a short presentation by interim chaplains, Dean and Julie Jaderston and music led by Assistant Professor of Music Marisa Callan and the Sterling College choirs. Hot chocolate will be served and the public is invited to attend this outdoor celebration. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in Heritage Hall.

Sterling College announced Justin Morris ’00 has been named director of athletic operations, effective December 1. Morris currently serves as the assistant athletic director and head women’s soccer coach.
“We are pleased to have Justin in this valuable role in our athletic department in his new position as director of athletic operations. He has a strong record of dedication to Sterling College, is a proven relationship builder on and off campus and trains our student-athletes to be servant leaders,” said Dr. Scott A. Rich, president.

Six Sterling College debate and forensics students traveled for their second intercollegiate forensics tournament this season. Junior Joseph Bahr of Harker Heights, Texas, brought home the most awards for Sterling College, finishing in the top five in four competitions. The group traveled to Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Okla., for the competition between nine schools Nov. 2-3.

The Sterling College English Department hosted its first Writing Workshop Weekend for high school students on November 2-3. The event spanned two days with a poetry slam on Friday, followed by workshops on Saturday. The Saturday workshops were led by Sterling College Assistant Professor of Language and Literature Aaron Brown and Wichita-based writer Luke Gilstrap.

A contemporary play that has been compared to a Hitchcock-like suspense is next in this year’s Sterling College Theatre season. That show is “The Small Room at the Top of the Stairs” by Canadian playwright Carole Frechette which will be staged Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m. in Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus.

Two Sterling College forensics students traveled to the Missouri Mule Invitational for their first tournament this season. The concert, consisting of songs composed and arranged by Sorenson, will take place Monday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church. The event is free and open to the public.
