Sterling College to hold band, choir and small chamber ensemble concerts

The Sterling Community Band concert will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church under the direction of Dr. Brad Nix, associate professor of music.

The annual Candlelight Concert on Friday, Dec. 5, is themed Carols and Canticles. The Sterling College Chorale, Concert Choir and Highland Singers will sing four canticles and traditional Christmas carols at the United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. under the direction of Mark Clark, assistant professor of music.

Two art exhibits will be housed simultaneously in the gallery of the Art and Media Center at Sterling College. Lucas Knauss will display his senior thesis work, “Unnatural Selection: The Game!” along with the juried student art show, opening Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5-7 p.m. Awards for best of show, second and third place of the juried show will be announced at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event; artwork will be on display until Dec. 11.

Sterling College Online is filling this need by hosting an open house on Monday, Nov. 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Central Christian High School in Hutchinson for anyone interested in taking online classes.

The original productions “Doorway to the Shine” and “Cosmic Disarray” will debut Friday night in Culbertson Auditorium on Nov. 7-8 at 7 p.m. Featuring the work of six theatre majors, the shows will fulfill senior projects for Darsha Bechard, Jamie Fitzgerald, Cody Green, Cody Martin, Shane Rogers and Chloe Wootton. The two plays will run consecutively separated by a 30-minute intermission. Admission is free with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The Kansas state leadership conference for Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda met on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Sterling College to learn from local business leaders and professors. Approximately 50 students and their chapter advisers attended the one-day conference.

“We had students from all over the state come to hear professionals speak about various aspects of being a business leader. It is a great opportunity for our students to converse with business professionals and students from other PBL chapters,” said Tim Thorpe, assistant professor of business.

Sterling College debate defeats current national champions, forensics continues to excel

The trophy cases in Spencer Hall have filled up quickly this year as Sterling College continues to earn first and second places in team sweepstakes across the country. Their most recent victory was defeating the current national champions, Western Kentucky University, at the Missouri Mule Swing Speech and Debate Tournament this weekend. The tournament included top-ranked teams from across the country and was hosted by University of Central Missouri on Oct. 17-19.

Each year the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers recognizes minorities who make outstanding contributions to science, technology and/or engineering research. This year, NOBCChE recognized Dr. Farai Kwaramba, assistant professor of chemistry at Sterling College, for his research on hydrosilylation catalysis technology by awarding him with the Advancing Science Grant.
