Assistant Professor of Art Daniel Swartz illustrated an article in the April 2013 issue of Columbus Monthly magazine about fun and creative date locations in Columbus, Ohio. Swartz’s illustrations, done in acrylic, highlighted a butchering class and a Latin dance class. He used the freelance job as an example for his students at Sterling College.
The Dean’s List for the spring 2013 semester has been released. Criteria for the Dean’s List include the completion of at least 12 graded credit hours and a cumulative and semester GPA of 3.5 or better. This semester 175 students met these criteria. The following students were named to the list.

Graduate Randi Morris ’13 was named an Outstanding Graduating Senior by the Wichita section of the American Chemical Society on April 30 on the campus of Newman University. The award is given to seniors who have excelled academically with a minimum 3.5 grade point average and are nominated by their college or university.“Randi has been an outstanding student academically,” said Dr.
On Saturday, May 18, Sterling College added 135 names to its alumni list. President Scott Rich conferred the senior class’s degrees on the lawn in front of Cooper Hall at the 121st Annual Sterling College Commencement Ceremony.
Senior hurdler Cedrique Smith won the NAIA National Championship in the 110m Hurdles on Saturday afternoon in Marion, Ind. on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University with a time of 13.97.
Smith, from Phoenix, Ariz., separated from the leaders on the final two hurdles to win his third NAIA National Championship in the event. The past two championships were won while racing for Azuza Pacific (Calif.).
John M. ’69 and Gwenyth “Gwen” (Adair) '70 Haspels were the recipients of the 2013 Distinguished Service Award, given to Sterling College alumni for a lifetime of service in Southwest Ethiopia. The Haspelses are still serving in Ethiopia, so their son, Chuck Haspels ’97, received the award in their honor.
Professor of Psychology Dr. Arnold Froese was conferred the rank of Faculty Emeritus of Psychology during Sterling College’s commencement exercises on Saturday, May 18. Froese has worked for the College since 1974 and served as chair of the psychology department.
Tillie Ehresman of Sterling, Kan., and Micah Mitchell of Broomfield, Colo., were named Outstanding Male and Female Students and received the 2013 Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award.
Dr. Jonathan Conard, assistant professor of biology, was awarded the 2012-2013 McCreery Teaching Award at Sterling College’s 121st Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18.
The semester is finished, but over 60 students, faculty and staff are still on campus at Sterling College preparing to leave on mission trips to nine countries. The teams began leaving May 20 and arrive back in the United States by June 5.
