Kansas State Fire Marshal receptacle requirements

During our yearly State Fire Marshal inspection, a point of emphasis was made campus wide regarding the approved methods of powering devices in rooms and offices.  In order to correct our deficiencies, we need to make some changes and educate everyone on what the State Fire Marshal regulations state for receptacle usage.

They are as follows:

  • You may have 2 overload protected (circuit breakers) power strips of any cord length plugged directly into a receptacle and all devices must be plugged into the power strip. Overload protected power strips will either have a reset switch or a reset button.
  • No power strip may be plugged into another power strip.
  • Power strips must be placed on a flat surface and are not allowed to hang down.
  • Multi-plug adapters that plug directly into a receptacle are not allowed.
  • Refrigerators must be plugged directly into a wall receptacle.
  • Extension cords cannot be used in residence hall rooms.
