The Sterling College debate team competed against the top teams in the nation at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., on Oct. 5-6. The Warriors selected this competition to have the opportunity to compete against the top team in the nation, Western Kentucky University, St. Olaf College, Hillsdale College, St. Anselm University, Ohio State University and many more.

Western Kentucky has been a dominant force for more than a decade and consistently known as the school to beat in Lincoln-Douglas debate. The number of coaches provided for the Western Kentucky team would be comparable to the total number of competitors on the Sterling College team. Even so, the Warriors had the better of the Hilltoppers with an 8-6 record on the weekend.

Individually, junior Brandon Hoesli of Salina, Kan., led the Warriors with a 5-2 record in the varsity division, advancing to the final round of competition and ending the tournament as the top speaker. Sophomore Darren Kootz-Eades of Great Bend, Kan., finished 4-1 and captured first overall in the novice division. Senior Jacob Skala of Newton, Kan., and junior Tyler Brotten of Newton, Kan., finished with 2-2 records and Skala was named sixth speaker overall.

“I was elated with the team’s performance. I believe they caught the attention of many of the coaches, which will serve them well at the national tournament at Eastern Michigan University in April,” said Coach Ken Troyer.
