Four Sterling College art and design seniors will display their final body of work at the senior art exhibition which opens with a reception on Thursday, April 25, from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit titled “Unearthed” will be on display in the Art and Media Center gallery located at the corner of 8th and Washington through May 15.

The show features the work of Courtney Huber of McPherson, Kan., Melissa Kerr of Lyons, Kan., Evan Kolacny of Abilene, Kan., and Anely Laguna of Lexington, Neb., in the mediums of graphic design, vector illustration and painting. The senior art exhibition marks the summation of the art and design degree requirements and of students’ final personal portfolios.

All of the pieces in the show were created over the course of the current semester. When deciding the subject matter for their individual final bodies of work, each student chose to create pieces that bring to light various social issues that they sought to address through artistic means

“‘Unearthed’ will showcase works of art that are visually disparate, yet conceptually interconnected,” said Hanna Kozlowski-Slone, assistant professor of art and design. “From raising awareness of the global water crisis to addressing issues of body image and mass production, the works in the exhibition are cohesive in that they seek to ‘unearth’ and expose important problems within our society. I have been impressed by our seniors’ diligence and ambition, and am ecstatic about their culminating body of work."

“I am ecstatic to have finally reached this moment in my college career,” said Huber. “All of my effort over the past four years has been for the completion of this final body of work. I hope that when people look at the pieces we have created they are inspired by the very things that inspired us.”
