Coach Lambert Speaks at the 2010 KCAC Football Media Day
Salina, Kan. - On Friday, August 6, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) held its football media day at Salina Country Club in Salina, Kansas to give the Kansas media the chance to interact with the KCAC football head coaches. Coach Andy Lambert represented Sterling College and spoke about the expectations of the coaching staff for the upcoming football season.
"We do not judge success totally from our record." Coach Lambert said
"It's one thing to be a good player, but another thing to be on good team and that's what we tried to instill in our players this past spring." Coach Lambert said. Being a group and not a collection of individuals was a concept that Lambert repeated throughout his speech.
When addressing the areas of the football team that needed improvement, Lambert thought there were two main areas that need addressed. The first area is replacing the losses in the defensive backfield. The positions in the backfield need to be replaced and play needs to be upgraded according to Lambert. Secondly, Lambert believes that the wide receiver position play needs to be better in 2010. The 2009 offense was dependent on the run and was one dimensional. In 2010, the offense needs to be more balanced to be successful.
In the defensive secondary, the Warriors must replace Drew Lott, who graduated this last spring. Lott led the Warriors in tackles and interceptions in 2010 and will be difficult to replace. Tate Arnold will have the difficult task of replacing Lott's absence while the play of corners Mike Talton and Renard Bell need to improve for the Warriors to be effective in the secondary.
The Warriors' top four receivers from 2010 all return and need to improve on the dismal 2009 campaign. Joey Garcia was the leading receiver for the Warriors with only 35 receptions and 287 yards. With improvements made this spring and during camp with the possible additions of from the 2010 recruiting class, the 2010 receiving core should be improved over the 2009 core.
Lambert sees two main strengths for the 2010 Warrior football team and both strength are the front lines. The defensive front line will be upgraded in 2010 and will be a great foundation for defensive coordinator Chuck Lambert to build another successful and tough Warrior defense. Offensively, the Warriors will have the right combination of size, speed, and agility on the front line to allow offensive coordinator Brian Fish to resurrect the Warrior offenses of just a few years ago.
David Guthmiller, Mike Jones, and Chris Story are slated to anchor the 2010 defensive line. Guthmiller will be a sophomore and will look to expand on the contributions he made in 2009. Jones returns as a junior following an All-KCAC Honorable Mention performance in 2009. Story is a senior transfer student that should add experience and athleticism to make an immediate impact on the defensive line in 2010.
The offensive line in 2010 will be very experienced. Of the five offensive line position, three are juniors or older and all five have playing experience. The line will be anchored by senior and All-KCAC second team lineman Mike Danski.
At media day, preseason polls are voted on and released. The Warriors were picked to finish fourth in both the media and coaches polls. Friends University was picked number one in both polls
