Warriors Finish Fourth; Austin Ties for Second
McPherson, Kan. - The Sterling College golfers finished fourth at the Central Christian Fall Tournament in McPherson, KS. The men started the second round seven shots behind the leaders with a strong showing from Stephen Austin. Stephen tied for the first round low score with a 71. The Warriors improved by two strokes over their first round total, but it proved to be not enough. The team finished in fourth, only three shots away from the outright title. Austin finished his second round with a 75. This put him in a four way tie for second place, one shot out of first.
"We played o.k. the past two days," said Coach Cureton. "We won this tournament last year, so we had high hopes of repeating this year. I felt our guys grinded over both rounds. Even Stephen's first round of 71, I felt like he grinded for that score. I'm happy with our overall scores from the three tournament rounds. We continue to take the necessary steps forward for our program. I was thrilled for Stephen and the tournament he played. He worked hard this past summer, and the results are starting to pay off."
The women also competed at the Central Christian Fall Tournament. The Lady Warriors were once again paced by sophomore Alexa Pelton. She finished seventh overall. Freshmen Katelynn Cantrell and Lauren Bonewell weren't far behind. Cantrell finished in ninth and Bonewell finished in a tie for eleventh. "Our women continue to make improvements every day. This was a tough course for them with a lot of carry over water. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do in the next tournament. I believe all three will play well," Cureton stated.
The Warriors are off for a week and a half and resume action on Monday and Tuesday, September 27-28, at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence, KS.
