About the Program

A major in mathematics at Sterling College prepares students for careers in industry, secondary education or graduate studies. Students will study both theory and applications of mathematics through a series of classes, such as Modern Algebra, Probability Theory, and Numerical Analysis. The variety of courses required will build a wide foundation of mathematical knowledge, allowing students a variety of choices upon graduation. 

For students interested in engineering, Sterling College has teamed up with Wichita State University to offer a dual-degree Pre-Engineering concentration. There are two tracks a student can follow, biomedical engineering and industrial engineering. Pursuing biomedical engineering will culminate in a BS in Biological Mathematics from Sterling College and a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Wichita State University. Pursuing industrial engineering will culminate in a BS in Mathematics from Sterling College and a BS in Industrial Engineering from Wichita State University.

The mathematics department works with the education department in offering licensure in secondary mathematics education for grades 6-12. Students in this program will take a series of professional studies classes that will allow them to hone their pedagogical skills and learn from working professionals as they spend time in local classrooms. Graduates from this program are prepared to take the Praxis II, the required licensure test for the state of Kansas.
Due to the versatility of a mathematics degree, students are highly encouraged to pair a mathematics major with other majors or pursue one of the two interdisciplinary degrees, business mathematics and biological mathematics. Popular choices for a double major with mathematics are business, chemistry, and biology.
