Sterling College named to “Most Beautiful Colleges” List
Sterling College has been named to the “25 Most Beautiful Colleges and Universities in the Midwest 2017” by Christian Universities Online. The list was created “to present the best the Midwest has to offer when it comes to overall campus beauty.”
“We are pleased to be included in this list as we know firsthand what a beautiful place Sterling College is for learning and acquiring knowledge. Our historic buildings combined with our wonderful faculty and staff make it a joy to live, work and grow at Sterling College,” said Scott Rich, president.
Sterling has several picturesque spots on campus including Cooper Hall, the original building for campus built in 1887. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the American Presbyterian/Reformed Historical Sites Registry, and received extensive renovation to reopen in fall 2003.
Another well-visited place on campus is Brownlee Plaza, located at the center traffic point for the campus in front of the Mabee Library. It was the gift of alumni and friends to honor George Brownlee, alumnus and former staff member. The clock is a memorial to alumni Harold and Aileen Evans.
Additionally, Sterling boasts The Heritage Gardens and Outdoor Learning Lab which were designed as an area for learning, relaxation and devotion. The design of the gardens focuses on native Kansas plants and includes a water feature and sitting area fashioned from native Dakota sandstone and limestone. The garden also features a pergola and various beds of Kansas wildflowers designed to attract and provide a habitat for butterflies, birds and other species. The area can be used as an outdoor classroom and gives students a chance to get hands-on experience learning about Kansas plants and wildlife. The gardens were made possible through the support of a family that includes several generations of Sterling College alumni.
