Kansas Poet Laureate to visit Sterling College
Sterling College will host the current Poet Laureate of Kansas, Eric McHenry, on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016. McHenry will perform a reading of his poetry at 7 p.m. in Cornerstone in the Sterling College Student Union.
"Eric McHenry is an exceptional talent and warm individual, whose passion for poetry is made quickly evident in his talks. He is rightfully our state’s poet laureate—a master of poetic form, who speaks with infectious humor, wit and sincerity about life in the Midwest,” said Aaron Brown, assistant professor of writing and editing.
McHenry earned his M.A. in Creative Writing at Boston University. McHenry, who grew up in Topeka, is now an associate professor of English at Washburn University. In addition to being named Poet Laureate of Kansas, he was named winner of Poetry Northwest’s Theodore Roethke Prize in 2011, as well as winner of the Kate Tuft Discovery Award in 2007. He is the author of the poetry collections titled “Odd Evening,” “Mommy Daddy Evan Sage” and “Potscrubber Lullabies.” McHenry’s “Odd Evening” will be available for purchase at the reading.
The event is made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council, an organization which strives to make the arts more accessible.
