Sterling College student wins national poetry competition
Sterling College junior Kari Stewart of Hutchinson, Kansas, was recently selected as a 2016 Intro Journals Project winner. Stewart’s poem, “House Fire,” was one of six poetry pieces selected from submissions of undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation. Stewart was awarded a cash prize, and her poem was published in a prominent literary journal, Hayden’s Ferry Review.
“Kari brings a lot of creativity and enthusiasm to our department here at Sterling. She is a nontraditional student, with a husband and three boys, who has come back to school to pursue her dream of writing. She clearly has a talent for it, and I’m excited to see how she continues to grow in her writing and serve as a model for her fellow students,” said Aaron Brown, assistant professor of writing and editing.
The Intro Journals Project is a national literary competition for undergraduate and graduate students that is run by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, an organization of hundreds of academic institutions, including Sterling College.
