Nine trophies for five Sterling College Debate and Forensics junior varsity members were handed out at the JV National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, on March 11-13. Leading the award count was freshman Wesley Lowrey of Topeka, Kansas, with three first-place finishes in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking and overall speaker in IPDA. To qualify, students must be in their first two years of collegiate competition.

“This was Wes’ first time for a break into the elimination round and he certainly finished with style. I’m excited for him and know that it has to do with all of the hard work he put in this season. Although it is the end of the junior varsity season, I look forward to watching these students develop next year,” said Ken Troyer, director of debate and forensics.

Lowrey finished fourth overall in the pentathlon, competing in only three events while others in the pentathlon competed in up to five.

In addition to Lowrey’s awards, freshman Amanda Del Toro of Manhattan, Kansas, finished second in informative speaking with sophomore Nicole Ellerman of Topeka, Kansas, finishing fourth. Sophomore Bryce Harner of Hutchinson, Kansas, finished sixth place in IPDA while freshman Zach McElfresh of Kechi, Kansas, followed close behind with a ninth place finish. Despite having only five competitors, Sterling College walked away with second in the overall team sweepstakes.
