Sterling College announced last week that Dr. Spencer Wagley of Sterling, Kansas, will begin serving in the newly formed role of associate vice president for academic affairs. Wagley is currently an associate professor of education at the College and will begin his new position July 1.

“The associate vice president for academic affairs is a new part of our office’s structure. We are combining two part-time associate dean roles into one full-time position that allows for greater leadership and support as we ensure successful design, implementation, evaluation and assessment of improvement within academics at Sterling College,” said Dr. Ken Brown, vice president for academic affairs.

“Spencer will be a great fit for this role. He is well-known and respected throughout our institution and beyond, and presents multiple areas of evidence to his skills, qualifications and experience as related to this administrative position. He has a passion for the College and working with his fellow faculty members,” said Brown.

Wagley has worked at Sterling College since 2006 and was awarded the William M. McCreery Teacher of the Year Award in 2010. During the past 10 years, he has filled several roles in addition to faculty, most recently as director of Foundations of Servant Leadership. Wagley also develops classes and teaches for Sterling College Online.

Wagley holds a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University, an M. Div. from Hardin-Simmons University, and a B.S.E. from East Texas Baptist University. Before coming to Sterling College, he taught English, theatre and speech at the secondary level in Texas.
