On March 4-5, Sterling College hosted the Phi Beta Lambda spring state leadership conference, a competition that gives college students from across the state of Kansas a chance to showcase their knowledge of business practices and skills. All five participants from Sterling College placed either first or second in a range of categories, qualifying them for the national PBL competition. Sterling College participants include Jennifer Fruechting of Andover, Kansas; Matthew Garrett of Abbyville, Kansas; Joy Henderson of Maize, Kansas; Elizabeth Herrington of Wichita, Kansas; and Jamie Tilton of Scott City, Kansas.

“I am very impressed by the efforts of my students. They have such a wide variety of skill sets, and this competition gave them a chance to put those talents on display. The PBL students were great representatives for Sterling College as they simultaneously hosted and participated in this year’s competition,” said Assistant Professor of Business Timothy Thorpe.

Fruechting earned three spots at nationals. She received first place in Job Interview, second place in Organizational Behavior and second place in Help Desk.

Garrett also earned three spots, placing first in three categories: Cyber Security, Computer Concepts and Informational Management. Garrett also placed third in Help Desk.

Henderson brought home three awards as well. She was awarded first place in Financial Concepts, second place in Accounting Principles and second place in Statistical Analysis.

Herrington took first place in Business Communication and second place in Marketing Concepts.

Tilton earned first place in Computer Applications and third place in both Computer Concepts and Microeconomics.

The national Phi Beta Lambda competition will take place June 29-July 2 in Atlanta, Georgia.
