Future Sterling College professor to speak on dark matter
Dark matter may not be a common topic of discussion in Sterling, Kansas, but an event held at Sterling College will offer students and community members the rare chance to learn all about it. Emily Grace, who will be joining the faculty as a physics professor in the fall, will speak about her research on dark matter at a seminar held on the College’s campus on Feb. 16.
“We are excited to have Emily Grace come to campus to share about dark matter and her contributions to the field. This seminar is a great opportunity for students and community members to meet and get to know Emily before she comes to teach in the fall. She has a lot of knowledge to share, and we are glad to provide the opportunity for her to educate others on the topic,” said Ken Brown, vice president for academic affairs.
Grace’s presentation, titled “Shedding Light on Dark Matter: Looking for a Mysterious Particle Using Liquid Argon,” will be held in room 142 of Thompson Hall on the campus of Sterling College at noon on Feb. 16. The event is free and open to all students and community members who are interested in attending.
During her talk, Grace will cover basic theories concerning dark matter and the methods used when attempting to detect the unique particle on Earth. In particular, she will expand on the topic of using the properties of liquid argon to detect dark matter and will discuss her own work with cryogenic liquid argon.
Grace is expected to receive a Ph.D. in Physics from Royal Holloway University of London in the spring of 2016. She currently holds an M.S. in Secondary Education and a B.S. in Physics from Indiana University, as well as a B.A. in Psychology from Bethel College (Ind.). Grace will join Sterling College’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in the fall semester of 2016.
