Watney to begin fellowship at Mercatus Center, study at George Mason
Caleb Watney, graduate of Sterling High School and Sterling College, left his Kansas home Friday to travel to Washington D.C. to begin an internship with American Action Forum, followed by graduate studies at George Mason University where he received a full-ride scholarship and stipend to study economics through a fellowship with the Mercatus Center. His work for the Mercatus Center will focus on technology policy, most likely working with broadband regulation, rural technology and privacy concerns.
“It’s really cool that I’m getting paid to go study what I want, economics, under people whose essays I have been reading online for a couple of years now. And now I will get to be in D.C. working with them, so that is really exciting,” said Watney.
Watney completed an internship with State Policy Network in summer 2014, and connections through that experience led to the opportunity for his fellowship. He will attend George Mason University as a full-time student for two years and work 20 hours per week at the Mercatus Center. Like many who work in the area of Washington D.C., he will not live in the capital, but commute to school, work, and his new home.
