Who says jazz music and classical music don’t mix? Not the Sterling College Music Department. The instrumental music program will be presenting an unusual concert this Sunday, April 18 at 3 p.m. in Upper Wilson Hall that will include both jazz and classical styles of music and will feature both the Jazz Band and the Flute Trio.
Paul Brandes will be the speaker for the 2021 Sterling College Commencement ceremony.

Paul Brandes ’11, chaplain and associate vice president for student life and church relations, will be the speaker for the 2021 Sterling College Commencement ceremony. The ceremony will honor the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 and will take place on Saturday, May 15, at 9:45 a.m. on East Cooper Lawn on the Sterling College campus.

The Love Sterling Planning Committee is asking for community members to submit their projects for the eleventh annual Love Sterling event, set to take place April 24. On the day of Love Sterling, groups of Sterling College students spread throughout the community to complete projects such as landscaping, deep cleaning, painting and more.

Sterling College has announced Paul Brandes ’11 has expanded his current role as chaplain to now serve as Sterling’s associate vice president for student life and church relations. In this capacity, Brandes will focus on growing enrollments in the Department of Theology and Ministry and further partner with the Office of Student Life on tasks supporting student life.
Sterling College has announced Justin Morris ’00 has expanded his current role as athletic director and will now serve as Sterling’s associate vice president of athletics and facility management. In this capacity, Morris will assist in growing the use of campus facilities during the summer and off-peak seasons.
“Justin has such a strong record of dedication to Sterling College. We are pleased to have him overseeing the facility management of our campus buildings and spaces,” said Dr. Scott A. Rich, president.

Sterling College has announced several changes focused on serving the needs of prospective students and their families. Dennis Dutton ’82, vice president for enrollment, will be moving to a new position, executive director for the arts, where he will lead the arts programs at Sterling. Additionally, the College has announced the creation of the Office of Enrollment Services, combining the admissions and financial aid offices to provide a seamless onboarding experience for new students to Sterling. This team will be led by Mitzi Suhler, vice president for enrollment services.

The Sterling College Debate and Forensics Teams once again competed in a virtual environment and proved they have adapted well to the new competition format. Sterling competed against more than 65 schools and 500 individuals in the Gorlok Gala Debate Tournament, hosted virtually by Webster University in St. Louis, Mo.

Sterling College will welcome Nikki Lerner, artist, speaker and author, on Friday, February 12, 2021, for the spring Ross and Fern Freeman Lecture Series for Servant Leadership. The Freeman Lecture Series speaker will deliver her message at 10 a.m. in the Gleason Center on the campus of Sterling College. This event will have limited seating capacity due to COVID-19 precautions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cancelled or postponed many events and seasons, however, the Sterling College Debate and Forensics Teams have adjusted to virtual competitions to keep competing during the fall season. Sterling hosted an invitational tournament over Oct. 9-11, and most recently, competed in the Simpson Storm Tournament on Nov. 11-13, hosted by Simpson College.

Sterling College has announced the Sterling College MATCH-UP mathematics competition, a high school math competition that is open to all Kansas high schools and high school students. The competition aims to challenge high school scholars to creatively solve mathematics problems and find great joy in the problem-solving experience. The competition is open through January 15, 2021.
