The Kansas state leadership conference for Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda met on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Sterling College to learn from local business leaders and professors. Approximately 50 students and their chapter advisers attended the one-day conference.

“We had students from all over the state come to hear professionals speak about various aspects of being a business leader. It is a great opportunity for our students to converse with business professionals and students from other PBL chapters,” said Tim Thorpe, assistant professor of business.

Each year the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers recognizes minorities who make outstanding contributions to science, technology and/or engineering research. This year, NOBCChE recognized Dr. Farai Kwaramba, assistant professor of chemistry at Sterling College, for his research on hydrosilylation catalysis technology by awarding him with the Advancing Science Grant.

Shelby Huber of McPherson, Kansas, is building a strong résumé for her job search this spring. The Sterling College senior received two awards from juried art competitions over the past few months and continues to gain recognition for her paintings.

“Release,” originally painted for her Painting 3 class, received honorable mention in the international show “Mind, Spirit & Emotion” on Art-Competition.net. Other artists who won awards in “Mind, Spirit & Emotion” hail from El Salvador, Italy, Maldives and the U.S.A.

With a 42-39 nail-biting victory on Oct. 4 against Bethany College, Head Football Coach Andy Lambert passed Curt Bennett on the all-time football wins list.

In his 11 seasons at Sterling, Lambert has a 61-48 record, finished in the top three in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference three times, and won KCAC Coach of the Year in 2004, 2007 and 2013.
