Psychology Department Named "Department of the Year"

When the Sterling College Psychology Department was honored last week for winning the second annual "Department of the Year" award, the reason for the choice was clear: Sterling's psychology professors recruit personally and form relationships with their prospective students even before they start classes at the College.

Sterling College Art Professor David Harmon's Work Wins Award in Juried Show

David Harmon not only teaches art, he creates it, submits it-and wins awards for it. In 2009 Harmon has had two works accepted at juried art shows, and one of those pieces was awarded third place in the show. "Few of our students realize how much competition there is in the arts," said Harmon, a professor in the Sterling College Art and Design Department. "But the competition to get work accepted at juried shows and then considered for awards is good for us- as artists and as people."

Sterling College student Ashlen Stamm has always dreamed of owning a business. "I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. Even when I was a little girl I wanted to own a restaurant of my own." This desire led her to major in business at Sterling and to work with the business department's Quiznos franchise project. "The Quiznos project allows me to tell potential employers that I haven't just studied certain business concepts, I've applied them," she said. "It has huge impact on my preparation for the business world."

SC Achieves Success at Debates on a Plain Tournament and at KSCA Convention

For the second year the Sterling College debate team dominated at the annual Debates on a Plain Tournament, capturing first place in team sweeps competition and the championship of the varsity division. "It was an outstanding way to start the season. It really sets the tone," said Ken Troyer, Sterling College's forensics and debate coach. "There is no doubt our showing sends a message to others in the region as we will likely have at least two teams ranked in the top 20 when the first rankings are released."

Sterling Seeks Public Comment for Reaccreditation

Sterling College will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit December 7-9, 2009, by a team representing The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Sterling College has been accredited by the Commission since 1957. Its last comprehensive visit for reaccreditation occurred in 2000.

SC Introduces Fine Arts Hall of Fame During Homecoming 2009

Next weekend is significant for Sterling College. Not only will the College inaugurate its eleventh president and celebrate its annual homecoming, it will also introduce the Sterling College Fine Arts Hall of Fame.
Because of the College's strong tradition in the arts, including theatre, music, art and communications, Sterling College alumni, led by SC alumnus Greg McGlynn, have established the Fine Arts Hall of Fame to recognize outstanding contributions to the Sterling College arts programs as well as the arts in general.
