Sterling College students tour Viega Manufacturing

Business students from Sterling College enjoyed the opportunity to tour the Viega Manufacturing site in McPherson, Kansas, on Friday, Oct. 7, as a part of Manufacturing Day. Viega is a global leader in press pipe fitting technology for industrial, commercial and residential projects. Sterling College students in attendance represented the cost accounting class and the Phi Beta Lambda business club. They were accompanied by Assistant Professor of Business Irene Barkman.

“The opportunity to tour a plant reinforces what is taught in the classroom. When we talk about manufacturing overhead in the classroom, it can be somewhat nebulous. Now, the students can visualize overhead and how it affects product costing. The Viega staff were very welcoming to our Sterling College group as the group represents leaders of the future,” said Barkman.

Viega Manufacturing opened its doors to the public to join in the nationwide Manufacturing Day celebration. Manufacturing Day was created to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. It also gives manufacturers an opportunity to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of manufacturing’s public image and ensure the ongoing prosperity of American industry.
