The Sterling College Chorale and SC Concert Choir have been preparing for the 3rd Annual Composer Festival, scheduled for Monday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church. This year’s featured composer will be Jackson Berkey, an internationally recognized composer and pianist.
Something as simple as doing your homework can yield an unexpected opportunity, especially if you do it well. Such was the case when Sterling College senior Courtney Huber of McPherson, Kan., chose a familiar nonprofit organization, India Christian Ministries, to re-brand for her graphic design class.
The Office of the Registrar has a new, yet familiar face this year. Rebecka Vessey became the fulltime assistant registrar in August, working on athletic eligibility and parent and student questions about classes and scheduling.
An observant visitor to the College will notice “Established 1887” banners around campus and note the institution is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The College is using annual events and special occasions to emphasize the legacy created through professors, staff, alumni and friends of the College. Alumni and friends of the College are encouraged to participate in several activities throughout the year.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association awarded the 2011-2012 SC Volleyball Team with the AVCA Academic Award for the second year in a row. By maintaining at least a 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, Sterling became a part of an elite 6.19%, or 33 teams, in the NAIA to earn the award.
Arlen Nuest and Debbie Staton were recognized for their continued service to the College at the annual Kick Off Banquet. Nuest has served Sterling as a plumber and electrician for 25 years, and Staton has worked for the College in multiple capacities for 30 years.
Staff members were recognized for career benchmarks during the annual Kick Off Banquet on August 8, 2012. Hosea Bell and Song Kirk have served at the College for 15 years, and Vicky Kirchoff has served for 20 years.
The annual faculty art show will feature the work of Sterling’s newest addition to the art and design department, Assistant Professor Hanna Kozlowski-Slone. The exhibit titled “Between Spaces, Holes, and Absences” will have an opening reception in the Sterling College Art Gallery on September 6 from 6-8 p.m., with a chance to hear Kozlowski-Slone talk about her work at 6:30 p.m.
