Sterling College professor co-authors book on Kansas trails
Cool fall weather is right around the corner, and finding the perfect place to spend time outdoors is now easier thanks to a Sterling College professor’s book about the best trails in Kansas. Sterling College’s Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Jonathan Conard has co-authored a book with his sister, Kristin Conard, a writing teacher and freelance travel writer. The book, “Kansas Trail Guide: The Best Hiking, Biking, and Riding in Kansas,” is published through University Press of Kansas and has been available for purchase since May 2015.
Conard recognized and wanted to fulfill the need for an updated Kansas trail guide, given the last book on hiking trails in the state was published almost 10 years ago. Since that time, existing trails have been expanded and new trails have been added.
“People may not recognize that there are some profoundly beautiful places in Kansas. I wanted the book to inspire a deeper appreciation of trails in the state and give people both the knowledge and inspiration to get out and start exploring,” said Conard.
The trail guide is written for hikers, cyclists and equestrians of every background, from novice to professional. Each section of the book features information about a location that the Conards visited during the summers they spent researching trails in Kansas. The authors discuss the history and natural features of each location and highlight certain aspects of the landscape through an array of amateur and professional photographs. The chapters also include helpful tips for navigating the trail, maps and information on the nearest place to camp. A blog to accompany the book, featuring upcoming events and information related to trails and other outdoor activities, can be found at www.kansastrailguide.com.
“We are extremely grateful to have Dr. Conard leading our Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. His dedication to both his students and his research is unparalleled. The ‘Kansas Trail Guide’ is just one example of his passion and hard work coming to fruition, adding to his growing list of publications,” said Dr. Ken Brown, vice president for academic affairs.
