Sterling College Concert celebrates Women
March is Women’s History Month and Sterling College Concert Choir will be celebrating with their concert “Music, She Wrote” which is slated for this Sunday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling. Besides Concert Choir, the program will feature select ensemble Highland Singers as well as SC Lasses (women’s choir) and SC Lads (men’s choir).
All of the music on the concert program is either written by or arranged by women. The Oscar-winning song “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish from the movie “Barbie” will be among the featured numbers by the Concert Choir.
March being noted for St. Patrick’s Day will also be observed in the concert as the Concert Choir will perform two Irish based songs – “You Do Not Walk Alone” by Elaine Hagenberg which is based on a traditional Irish Blessing and another by composer Ruth Elaine Schram which is based on the traditional Irish song “Shule Aroon.”
Highland Singers, the select vocal ensemble, will perform “Sing, My Child” by Sarah Quartel and “Alleluia” written by Elaine Hagenberg based on a text by St. Augustine. They will also do a song entitled “Clap Praise” by Diane L. White-Clayton which will feature rhythmic clapping and some energetic piano accompaniment.
The SC Lasses will perform “A Soft Place to Land” from the Broadway musical “Waitress” written by popular artist Sara Bareilles. The SC Lads will do a song entitled “Bound for Jubilee” by Joyce Eilers.
There is no charge for the concert but a free-will offering will be taken to help with financing the Highland Singers trip to perform in Scotland in May of 2025. The hour-long concert will also be livestreamed on the Sterling College Music Facebook page.
Marisa Callan, assistant professor of music at Sterling College, directs all the vocal groups while Natalie Schweizer, junior music education student of Sterling, is accompanist.
