Sterling College is excited to announce the launch of its Zero-Cost Textbook Initiative, a groundbreaking program aimed at reducing student expenses and enhancing academic accessibility by eliminating textbook costs for students taking some of the most-enrolled General Education (GE) courses. Set to officially begin in the fall of 2025, the initiative has already made significant progress, with over 165 classes in the fall 2024 semester offering zero-cost textbooks to students. Sterling College now ensures a track through the General Education program can be completed without requiring any textbook expenses, underscoring the college’s commitment to affordability and student success.

“By launching this program, Sterling College is reducing financial burdens and ensuring that students have immediate access to the resources they need for success. This program is yet another way that Sterling partners with families to make higher education affordable,” said Dr. Scott Rich, president.

The Zero-Cost Textbook Initiative aligns with Sterling College’s goal to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality education. By reducing the financial strain associated with textbook purchases, the college aims to improve academic performance, boost student retention, and position itself as an appealing option for prospective students seeking a cost-effective college experience.

“I am thrilled to announce the formal launch of our Zero-Cost Textbook Initiative for the General Education program. This has been a goal we’ve been working toward for several years, and it’s incredibly gratifying to see it grow and finally come to fruition. A huge thank you to all the faculty who have creatively reimagined their courses to provide zero-cost textbook alternatives while maintaining the same high standards of quality for their classes. This initiative represents a significant opportunity to make a positive impact on our students and enhance their educational experience. I am excited for what lies ahead,” said Laurel Watney, director of Mabee Library.

The Zero-Cost Textbook Initiative offers Sterling College students a range of significant benefits. By eliminating textbook expenses, the program reduces financial barriers, promoting greater access and equity across campus. Students gain access to all course materials on the first day of the semester, ensuring they are prepared from the very start of their academic year. Digital formats also allow students to take textbooks on the go, making studying more flexible and accessible. Additionally, research has shown that accessible course materials positively impact grades, further supporting students’ academic success.

The program is expected to have a significant impact on the academic experience at Sterling College, and faculty across disciplines have collaborated to support its success. By launching the Zero-Cost Textbook Initiative college-wide, Sterling College will set a new standard for affordability and accessibility in higher education, reflecting its ongoing commitment to empowering students through servant leadership.
