Director of the nationally ranked Sterling College debate and forensics team, Ken Troyer, has co-authored a book with two of his fellow debate directors. The Sterling College assistant professor’s textbook, “Argumentation and Debate: A Strategic Perspective,” is published through Linus Publications and is now being used for fall communication classes at a handful of colleges and universities.

“The text examines a bit of the history of rhetoric as well as the origins of argumentation along with the transition to the more contemporary competitive debate. The text can be used for introductory argumentation or debate courses and could also supplement more advanced courses,” said Troyer.

The book was co-authored by Troyer of Sterling College, Gary G. Harmon of Kansas Wesleyan University and Dr. David C. Bailey of Southwest Baptist University. Together the team has over 75 years of experience in debate and forensics.

“The knowledge and experience that Ken brings to Sterling College in debate and forensics is invaluable to our school. He pushes our students to excel in their craft and continually leads them to successful seasons at the national level. His insight, along with that of his peers, in textbook form is a wonderful reference that can now be shared with professors and students across the country,” said Dr. Gregory P. Kerr, vice president for academic affairs.

The Sterling College debate and forensics team has been ranked nationally in the top 25 for five consecutive years. Troyer is chair for the Department of Communications, Media and Theatre Arts, which offers two majors with a combined 10 concentrations. They also partner with other departments on campus to form the interdisciplinary studies major, providing concentrations in media ministry, musical theatre, performing arts ministry, political studies, sport communication and sport writing.
