Juried art show opens with senior art show
Sterling College senior Whitney Long of Haysville, Kansas, will open her senior art show along with the annual Juried Student Art Show from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the gallery of the Art and Media Center. Awards for best of show and honorable mention in the juried show will be given at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Long is majoring in Art and Design: Education and has created a series of oil on canvas paintings that coincide with her desire to teach high school art after she graduates.
“In the art world, I’m showing my expression through nature by showing life and death through the lively leaves and decaying tree bark. On the education side, it shows the importance of repetition in making art by replicating the same image over and over,” said Long.
During her time at Sterling, she has been involved in volleyball, cheerleading and softball. She will complete her clinical teaching in the fall.
“Whitney has been a great student to work with. She is punctual, always meets deadlines, and is always willing to help her fellow students. It is exciting to see her use her acquired skills to fulfill her passion for teaching,” said David Stenulson, assistant professor of art and design.
The Juried Student Art Show will include work made between January 2016 and April 2017. Open to the entire student body at Sterling College, the show will feature work made in art classes and students’ personal work. Artworks include a variety of media and approaches, including both digital and natural media.
“The Juried Student Art Show is always a fun opportunity for student-artists to show off in an exhibition format what they have been creating over the last year. There are so many exciting pieces and evidence of growth from both our students and department,” said Daniel Swartz, assistant professor of art and design.
