Baseball Wins One in Spring Break Series
Victoria, Tex. - The Sterling College Warrior baseball team went 1-3 on a spring break series with the University of Houston-Victoria in Victoria, Texas over Sterling's spring break. Sterling played in three close games, all losses, before blowing out UHV in the final game 10-2. The Warriors are 12-11 so far in 2011 and 4-0 in the KCAC.
In the first game against the University of Houston-Victoria, the Warriors fell behind quickly. UHV scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, forcing Sterling to play from behind. SC responded by scoring one run in the top of the second inning then tying the game with a two run third inning. The game would turn into a defensive battle until the University of Houston-Victoria would score in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the tenth inning to win 4-3.
Sterling would take an early 5-2 lead in the second game that they would hold until the bottom of the fourth inning when UHV would score 6 runs and take an 8-5 lead. Sterling would threaten in the top of the fifth, scoring two more runs, but would be unable to overcome the three run deficit, losing 8-7.
After scoring one run in the top of the first inning of the third game, Sterling would be shut down offensively. The University of Houston-Victoria would go on to win the game 5-1 over the Warriors.
SC's offense would explode in the series finale. The Warriors would score 10 runs on six hits while only allowing two runs to win in convincing fashion in the final game of spring break. Matt Krause would lead the Warriors, going two for three from the plate with two RBI's.
After the spring break series, Sterling is 12-11 on the season, 4-0 in the KCAC. Conference play resumes this week when Sterling travels to Leavenworth for a double-header against the University of Saint Mary on Thursday and then will host the Spires on Saturday in a double-header. The double-header game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm for both dates.
