Sterling College hosted Attorney General Derek Schmidt as he gave a presentation to students, employees and the public discussing the current state of law enforcement in Kansas, talking about a few of the cases his office is currently involved in, and answering questions from the audience. Attorney General Schmidt believes Kansans are at an advantage over other states due to the relationships officers naturally have with the communities they serve since they live in the area, stating close ties between the two promote peaceful interactions. The Attorney General also commented that there is a capacity issue in public safety and public service due to the structure of the system – commenting that there is a shortage in field agents at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, a shortage in trained officers, and a generational change in county prosecutors in the state of Kansas as the current prosecutors reach retirement age.
