Missions beyond Comfort-Zone Christianity

The Christian life should be an ongoing adventure, filled with zest and joy...but the faith walk of many believers remains trapped in the mundane, mediocre and manageable monotony of church on Sunday morning and a hurried “Bless me, Jesus” prayer at night.

He was on the football team, six-foot one, two hundred and sixty pounds, a man of few words, not sure of his faith. I had been trying to get him interested in the Ethiopia team. He never signed up...but just before he graduated he stopped me outside the cafeteria one day and said, slowly and deliberately, “Dr. Hank, just once before I die,  I want to do something heroic, something truly noble.”

Are you dutifully walking the Christian path, but missing out on the venturesomeness of true commitment?  I want to invite you to take the risk to follow Jesus beyond your comfort zone. In Mark 16 He calls His followers to go into all the world, bringing good news to all creation.  The call is to go beyond your abilities, to raise money beyond what you think possible, casting yourself in humility on the One who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that you may ask or think (Eph. 3:20), totally beyond what you can manage in your own strength.

The Missions Department of Sterling College is offering several short-term service opportunities beyond the horizon each summer. Come with us to love on orphans and work in earthquake - stricken parts of Asia... Or give up Christmas-as-usual to serve on a medical mission to the Middle East. Or give your testimony to eager school children in a village in the densely populated country of Ghana, West Africa. Come and discover beyond the enchantment of exotic places, even beyond the yearning to do something noble, the truth that simply serving others in love is what following Jesus and servant leadership is all about.
