The mission of the Sterling College Writing Center is to equip students to be writers of academic and professional integrity. The Writing Center is a helpful place for students needing assignment-specific or discipline-specific writing assistance. Students who simply want to grow as writers may also benefit from the Writing Center.
What Students Can Expect from the Writing Center:
Personnel in the Writing Center will:
- review papers and identify grammatical and mechanical weaknesses--then work with students to address weaknesses and common mistakes
- offer guidance about the organization and structure of papers
- help students determine if they have met the requirements of an assignment
- provide feedback about the quality of thesis statements and supporting arguments
- provide instruction and counsel about source documentation
Personnel in the Writing Center will not:
- proofread, edit, or "correct" papers
- write papers or sections of papers
- conduct research
What Students Should Bring to the Writing Center:
Students should bring to their Writing Center appointments any documentation/information that will help Writing Center personnel customize instruction--assignment directions, notes from instructors in which specific concerns or writing mistakes are identified, etc. Students needing help on specific assignments must bring the instructor's assignment directions.
