Sterling College students present at Kansas Academy of Science & Kansas Entomological Society Meeting

Sterling College had a strong presence at the 156th Annual Meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science & Kansas Entomological Society (94th Annual) held at Emporia State University on April 5-6. Sterling College students presented six oral and posters presentations during the meeting. 
 
“Sterling College had great representation at the Kansas Academy of Science (KAS) meeting this year with a total of six students presenting their research. All the science faculty are extremely proud of all their hard work and dedication,” said Dr. Randi Wise, assistant professor of chemistry.
 
Sterling students who presented included: Sophia Hodge of Topeka, Kan.; Austin Medley of Irvington, Ky.; Kate Morgan of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Jordan Hansen of Sedgwick, Kan.; Madison (Maddy) Atha of Buena Vista, Colo.; and Michael Tweed of Pearland, Texas. Two of the Sterling College student presenters won awards including Madison (Maddy) Atha, who took second place in undergraduate poster presentations and Michael Tweed, who won third place in oral undergraduate presentations. 

Topics that were researched and presented include:

  • “Effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens AF and AW on Stem-root Ratio” created by Madison Atha and Dr. Wai-Foong Hong (professor of biology).
  • “The Biceps: The Long and Short” by Austin Medley and Dr. Wai-Foong Hong.
  • “The Effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (AF and AW) and Bacillus mojavensis (BM) on Human Bacteria” by Katie Morgan and Dr. Wai-Foong Hong.
  • “Bacillus mojavensis, Found in Kansas, as a Candidate for Biofertilizer in High-Salinity Environments” by Sophia Hodge and Dr. Wai-Foong Hong.
  • “Case Study: Inheritance of Supernumerary Teeth in a Family without a Systemic Condition”  by Jordan Hansen, Levi M. Hansen, and Dr. Wai-Foong Hong.
  • “Analysis of Torque on the Elbow, Arm Angle between Throwdown and Standing Throws at High Intensity,' by Michael Tweed, Debbie Rogers (assistant professor of biology), and Daniel Giese (Associate Professor of Physics).
